Rengasdengklok: 62 Years Later

This is house of Babah Djiauw Kie Siong, a Chinese farmer in Bojong Village – Rengasdengklok West Java. It is located near River Citayum, in Small Street with dense population.

In August 16, 1945, 04.00 AM it was a place for Soekarno (Bung Karno) with his family, when they were kidnapped by Pemuda; as history recorded also, Soekarno for first time compose the proclamation text before it was announced in Pegangsaan Timur 56 Jakarta
Soekarno and his family stayed in this room for a while, after Pemuda decided to move him and his family back to Jakarta

When Djiauw Kie Siong was alive, some household utensils were removed to West Java Museum in Bandung, it was told that Djiauw Kie Siong never had compensation for this removal

Now, the granddaughter of Babah Djiauw Kie Siong Mrs. Iin a.k.a. Djiauw Kwin Moy lives here
In 1958, this house was relocated by project of River Citarum; before relocation bed, furnitures from Jati wood, vitreous porcelain wares, chairs and tables used by Bung Karno and Bung Hatta were brought to museum in Bandung

In 6x8 meters living room there is two tables from Jati and several historical books, guest books and on the wall hanging pictures of Bung Karno also Bung Karno with Djiauw Kie Siong

In this room, Bung Karno, Ibu Fatmawati and Guntur Soeakrno Putra the elder son taking a rest, on other room is for Bung Hatta and other people

It was speculated that Independence Day was to be proclaimed in Rengasdengklok, on Thursday August 16, 1945 in this house, and red and white flags were raised by some people since August 15, 1945, knowing that tomorrow will be a proclamation, unfortunately when it was to be proclaimed, Mr. Ahmad Soebardjo came and brought all parties to Jakarta

In 1980s, a statue was built named Tugu Perjuangan, in Rengasdengklok Field several meters near Babah Djiauw house. Unfortunately Babah Djiauw house remained un-renovated

Kidnapping Bung Karno: A Background
Rengasdengklok Affair was a kidnapping affair conducted by young man (i.e. Adam Malik and Chairul Saleh) from Menteng 31 (headquarter of Pemuda) to Soekarno and Hatta. This occurred on 16 August 1945 around 04.00 AM.

On Agustus 15, 1945, at 22.00, in Pegangsaan Timur No. 56 Jakarta, Soekarno’s residence, a heated dispute arised between Pemuda and Bung Karno as written by Lasmidjah Hardi (1984:58); Ahmad Soebardjo (1978:85-87):

"Now Bung, Now! This Night we make the revolution!" said Chaerul Saleh try to impress Bung Karno that thousands of armed men were ready to besiege the city and get rid of Japanese Army. "We have to take the Power!" Said Sukarni emotionally. "We are ready to give our souls!" as they said in choir. Wikana challenges Soekarno and said; "If Bung Karno does not say anything this night, tomorrow will be a bloodbath"

Hearing words like those, Soekarno enraged and walked to Wikana saying: "This is my neck, bring me to corner and behead me! You don’t have to wait until tomorrow!". Hatta warned Wikana; "... Japan is past time. We have to face Dutch which will become a master again in our country. If gentlemen here disagree with what I’ve said, and thinking that you gentlemen are ready to proclamte the independence, why don’t you proclamate the independence by yourselves? Why asking Soekarno to do that?"

However, the Pemuda forced; "Do we have to wait untuk the independence was given as a gift, even though Japan already surrendered in It’s holy war!"
"Why don’t the people proclaim their independence? Why don’t we proclaim our independence as a nation?"
Calmly, Soekarno stated; "... petite force is not enough to face and total readiness of Japanese Army! Show me! Where’s the evidence of calculated force? What actions to save women and children? How to defend the independence after proclaimed? We will never have a help from Japan and Allied Forces. Imagine, how do we stand on our force?"

Pemuda are still forcing Soekarno-Hatta to proclaim the independence immediately. However Soekarno-Hatta is still with their beliefs. After repeatedly forced, Bung Karno said, he couldn’t decide alone he had to contact other people. In a small conference to decide about proclamation, several statesmen attended such as, Mohammad Hatta, Soebardjo, Iwa Kusumasomantri, Djojopranoto, and Sudiro. Hatta then conveyed the result, that preposition is unacceptable with and considered careless and also considering the lost of lives if there’s any bloodbath. Pemuda were not happy and conclude that Soekarno-Hatta is to be kidnapped to eliminate Japanese influence

On 04.00 AM August 16, 1945, Soekarno dan Hatta kidnapped. This action made Bung Karno unhappy, as stated by Lasmidjah Hardi (1984:60). Bung Karno is angry and unhappy, particularly on Pemuda who didn’t want to hear his reasons. Pemuda thought that their actions are patriotic. However seeing the circumstances and situation, Bung Karno didn’t have another choices except following thw will of Pemuda, he brought his wife Fatmawati and one year Guntur his elder son.

Rengasdengklok, small village near Karawang was chosen by Pemuda using military calculation; between PETA Daidan Purwakarta and Daidan Jakarta a close relationship had raised after they conduct together a military drill. Beside that, Rengasdengklok is remote around 20km from KedungGede Karawang. Therefore, detection is easily conducted for every movement of Japanese Army from Jakarta, Bandung or Central Java.

For a day, Soekarno and Hatta were in Rengasdengklok. The purpose of Pemuda (Sukarni and his friend) to force them for conducting proclamation immediately is now fruitless. Both Soekarno-Hatta still stuck to their original plan. In a bamboo house in the middle of paddy field in Rengasdengklok, in midday a heated argument occurred again; " Revolution is in our hands now, and we order you, if you don’t start the revolution, then ...". "Then What?" shouted Bung Karno angrily and stand up from his chair, everybody is astonished, nobody moved and spoke.

After the tense is down, and Bung Karno sat, with sof voice he spoke "In war and revolution is decisive moment. In Saigon, I’ve planned this Work on 17 ". " why on 17, why not now or 16?" asked Sukarni. "I believe in mystic”. I couldn’t explain logically, why 17 give me more hopes to me. But I can feel inside my soul, that’s the decisive moment. 17 is a holy number. First we are in holy Ramadhan, when we are fasting, this is the most holy time for us. Tomorrow, 17 is Friday, and it will be Fridal Legi, a happy Friday, holy Friday. Al-Qur'an was descendedn on 17, moslem praying 17 rakaat, therefore the holiness of 17 is not from human ". Lasmidjah Hardi (1984:61).

Meanwhile, in Jakarta, Mr. Ahmad Soebardjo from ‘old people repsentative’ and Wikana ‘Pemuda’ conferred about independence that must be conducted in Jakarta. Admiral Tadashi Maeda, is ready to guarantee the safety of people as long as they are in his house. Based on that conclusion, Jusuf Kunto from Pemuda, on that day brought Ahmad Soebardjo with his personal secretary, Sudiro, to Rengasdengklok for bringing back Soekarno and Hatta. They arrive in Rengasdengklok around 5.00PM, Ahmad Soebardjo guarantee, that independence will be proclaimed on 17 August 1945, at least on 12.00AM. With this guarantee Local PETA Company Commander, Cudanco Soebeno, agreed to release Soekarno and Hatta back to Jakarta (Marwati Djoened Poesponegoro, ed. 1984:82-83).

On 17 August 1945 proclamation text was announced using text that typed by Sayute Melik with typewriter "borrowed" (‘taken’ to be precise) from office German Navy Liaison Representative, Mayor (Kriegsmarine) Dr. Kandeler.
